Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work with a physician?

Family nurse practitioners complete bachelor and master degrees in nursing where they learn to assess and treat children and adults for acute and chronic diseases. Nurse practitioners can complete exams, order and interpret labs and imaging, and write prescriptions. As required by the state of Alabama, our nurse practitioners work in collaboration with a physician.

Can the nurse practitioners at Cove Telehealth for Women write prescriptions?

Yes, the nurse practitioners at Cove Telehealth for Women will prescribe medications that are part of your mutually agreed upon treatment plan. Some examples are medications for blood pressure, depression, hypothyroid, birth control, antibiotics, etc. We do not prescribe controlled substances such as narcotic pain meds, benzodiazepines (Xanax), nor attention deficit disorder (ADD) medications.

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a whole body approach to medical care that focuses on identifying the root cause of the disease to help your body to function optimally, not just patching the problem with layers of prescriptions. It is guided by the latest research and addresses causes such as vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, underlying inflammation, gut microbiome health, and the effects of stressors and toxins on the body. Many conventionally trained medical providers are starting to integrate this research into their practice. Learn more about functional medicine here. At Cove Telehealth for Women, we use the best of conventional and functional medicine to help you reach your health goals.
